In the above table if a student has 29.5 or 39.5 pocket expenses these can be expressed only if the inclusive series is converted into an exclusive series. The following 2 steps are followed in the conversion of an inclusive series into an exclusive series: (i) First, we find
the difference between the upper limit of class interval
and the lower limit of the next class interval. For
example the upper limit of the class interval 20-29 is
29.The lower limit of the next class interval 30-39 is
30. The difference is 30 minus 29 (ii) Secondly, half
of that difference is added to the upper limit of a class
interval and half is subtracted from the lower limit of
the class interval. Using these two steps, inclusive series of the above table has been converted into an exclusive series as under: Illustration:
